When I began my career in investor relations, it seemed the role was to keep management teams – particularly CEOs – from saying too much too soon to investors. It’s not that these senior executives were reckless or looking to mislead the marketplace. Far from it. They were simply excited about their company’s long-term prospects and wanted investors to share that same level of excitement.
25 years or so later, it seems the role now is to get management teams – particularly CFOs – to say more to investors … and do so more often. It’s not that these senior executives are being secretive or looking to mislead the marketplace. Far from it. They’ve simply lost sight that IR is more than a compliance function … and that many investors need more than data in order to fully appreciate an investment opportunity.
